About Western Sierra Guides

Raising a guide dog puppy is a good thing for the whole family. It is also a great 4-H project.

Guide Dogs for the Blind currently has more than 1,000 volunteer puppy raisers throughout eight western states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Qualified individuals receive puppies when they are approximately 8 weeks old. Puppy raisers house train their pups, teach basic obedience, good manners and above all they socialize them to the world the dogs will encounter as working guides.

No prior experience is necessary to raise a guide dog puppy. Raisers become a part of a local puppy club where they receive the training they need to become successful dog handlers. Raising a guide dog puppy has many rewards, especially the ability to help someone who is blind or visually impaired. For more information visit Guide Dog for the Blind, Inc.
